Re: Growing sugar?

Nan,

We are growing the "Black" or 'purple" sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum
'Violaceum'). It is very well-behaved, staying in a very tight clump--no
running rhizomes at all. Even in our mild climate, it is marginally hardy,
and it takes really hot weather for it to recover from winter and take off.
Most of the year, it just sits and waits for the 90-degree plus days and
nights in the upper 60s. After a couple of months of hellish heat--up to
108--it now looks great. Do you live far enough inland to get this kind of
heat? It helps to put it on a protected spot next to a reflective
south-facing wall.
