Acid Rain or Mt. Aetna Fallout?

In August when I returned to Crete, the lady who tends my garden was busy hosing
down all the foliage. She said there had been "acid rain" earlier that had
caused a lot of leaf damage (very noticeably in all the walnut trees on the
island, and some vegetables.) Someone mentioned the possibility of the Mt.
Aetna eruption as having had an effect. Rain in August is unheard of, but the
eruption might account for some condensation, I suppose. Does anyone have any
information? Will the walnut trees survive?
