It seems that whatever one does to discourage deer or racoons, they get
used to it. Deer, especially, are not dumb. They soon learn that a dog
tied up cannot reach them over by the hostas. I have tried all sorts of
things, and most things work for awhile.
With deer, the only things that are foolproof are an 8-foot fence or a
loose dog.
With racoons, they are very afraid of what they think MAY be an enemy.
In my fishpond, a floating glass ball definitely deters them. When they
disturb the water, it bobs around, reflecting the moonlight, and looks
like "eyes in the dark".
The deer never disturb the area where my windchimes are, I think because
it is constantly moving and reflecting night light. I have often
thought of hanging all those AOL CD's and others around the garden for
the same reason but would find them out of place in the daytime. I
might try it by the hostas and another deer-ravaged area.
