Another comment on keeping out gophers -- I don't recall seeing this point before -- if you plant in a raised bed, then you can line the entire bed in chicken wire/hardware cloth on the bottom. In my wooden raised beds, we laid the hardware cloth in from the inside and stapled it to the inside of the frame. We dug the frames in a few inches and then filled them with soil/compost, etc. Setting the wire in from inside means there are no external seems for gophers to penetrate.
