Salvia major??

Apologies for sudden rush of queries. Sign of end of season?!
 
Can anyone (Nick? Richard?) tell me if S. major is a 'real' name? I have the notion, probably mistaken, that it's a synonym for S. grandiflora - but then S. grandiflora itself seems to be, um, doubtfully real? sometimes it's referrred to this species, sometimes to that one...
 
In short: I'm confused. Again.
 
I've been given a plant by a friend who grew it from seed which arrived as S. major. What I want to know is the simple stuff. Viz, What is it? Where's it from? What's it need? What's it do? That's all! Nothing to it...
 
Anyone?
