New book - "Estate Gardens of California"

Hello everyone-

I recently attended a slide/talk about the
book "Estate Gardens of California". The
lecture was in Woodside, California at
Filoli, one of the estates featured in the
book. Filoli has 654 acres of gardens and
is a property of the National Trust.

The lecture was given by Karen Dardick
who wrote the text for the book. She lives
in Pasadena and writes articles for the
LA Times and other publications. Melba
Levick, who was not at the talk, shot
the photos for the book. She works and
lives in Paris, Los Angeles, and Spain and
has had photos in numerous other titles.

The book is not specifically about, but
frequently highlights, the importance
of Mediterranean influence on the history
and gardens of 15 California estates;
most of which are open to the public on
a regular basis or by special appointment.

I loved leafing through the lush photos of
this book. The history of the estates and
how they relate to the development of
California's landscape style is fascinating.
But, in general, I think the book is probably
too lightweight for many of the people on
the Medit-Plants listserv and I would have
liked to have known the names of the
cultivars in the photos.

You might want to take a look at this book
if you're planning a trip to California and
want a preview of some amazing places to
visit, and, to note which of the estates
require advance reservations.

And, if you're landscaping your property
or work in a related business, the book
shows excellent examples of hardscape,
plant combos and mature specimens.

Best regards,
Nancy
