Fire Retardant Checklist:
Nancy
Though we have very little problem with forest fires in most parts of NZ, mainly I think because many of our local species seem hard to burn, I was interested in thsi most useful and comprehensive information.

When we do get serious fires here they occur almost entirely in introduced species such as pine and other conifer plantations or stands of Eucalyptus and especially in scrubby areas where the main species is gorse. It is usually noticed that once the fire impinges on native vegetation it very soon dies out.

It seems to me that where the climate will stand it, species of for instance Pittosporum, Coprosma, Pseudopanax and Phormium might be safely considered for planting around houses in danger areas.
