Good grief. I'm ashamed. I had to go to Google to remember that Callistemon is the California-ubiquitous "Bottle Brush". Shame on me.
And I have one in my yard!I planted a hedge about 40 years ago. At the time I was warned that it would get leggy in time because the "old" wood would not produce leafy wood like the "young" wood.
Their advice made sense to me. They said go into every year and cut one third of the biggest and oldest canes to the ground.
Which I did. Which worked beautifully and kept the hedge full! Would that not work with Callistemon? ---Chas---
