I had a son with severe latex allergy. He could not eat or come in contact with foods from latex-bearing plants, such as bananas, avocado, cashews, and jicama. He could develop hives from touching a Pittosporum in the back yard. He probably developed the allergy from exposure to latex during medical procedures. Latex allergy is fairly common. It can also be quite severe. We carried an Epi-kit for him. About 10% of people who routinely wear latex gloves to keep their hands clean will develop a severe latex allergy. I found some scientific papers stating this, when working with the local bus company to explain why he would not get on a bus if the driver put on latex gloves to operate the wheelchair ramp.
