It looks like jujube zizyphus. That is in the sunset western garden
book, I think. The fruits are just beginning to ripen on my tree and I
love them. They turn a reddish brown color and are crisp and delicious
like a fresh crisp apple. Then they dry right on the tree and are used to
candy and use as dates in any recipe calling for dates.. Asian
people put them in soups to clarify the soups during winter and they
believe they have strong medicinal properties for women's health. You can
buy them in health food stores dried, quite expensive. When my fruit is
ripening and I have guests, the females just sit under the tree and eat them
until I make them stop. Eating a few is ok but you can overdo it and
wish you had stopped. I don't know where you live but the photo you
show already has ripening fruit in the drying stage. The fruits are edible
both hard and freshly ripened or drying as in your photo. Like
grapes/raisins, they have a different taste and texture depending on the stage
of ripening. |
