I'm guessing it is Balsamorhiza deltoides, balsamroot. It matches
pretty well with its cousin, B. sagittata, on page 684 of Rickett's
Wild Flowers of the United States: the Southwestern States, volume 4, part 3.
I wish I had the other half of the set (vols 2, 3, and 6: southeast,
Texas, and central US). Discovery of this reference cemented my
interest in growing unusual plants and in touring the back country..
