Dear Pamela -
Have you considered whether at least part of
the problem might not have been your "week of unseasonal good solid rain in
early June"? Here in the dryest part of Mallorca, we had an
enormous amount of unseasonal rain in May and early June, which meant
that we had water and heat at the same time. Very unmediterranean and
therefore not great for many mediterranean plants. Some plants got a growth
spurt (just when they were supposed to be going dormant) and then got hit by
the full force of the summer heat, while others got a good dose
of various fungi (how did your tomatoes, or those of your neighbours',
do?....the crops here were miserable).
By the way, Olivier Filippi's book has become
our bible in the last year, both in French and English!
best wishes .... Marianne Beith
