RE: Edgeworthia chrysantha die-back

Does anyone else grow this plant and have problems with the older trunks suddenly dying off? I have planted this out several times now in gardens, and some have done very well over the years, while others seem to get some soil borne disease and end up dying. In the past, it seems just pruning back to healthy wood and making sure the plant didn't dry out too much was a solution, but lately I have lost one plant altogether. I suspect it might be phytophthora, but would welcome anyone else's experience with this plant in a Mediterranean climate. I would like to replant the same plant back into the same relative location of the one that died, but wonder if I am asking for a repeat failure. The location gets morning sun only, is well drained, and has an overstory of Hymenosporum flavum trees as canopy, with adjacent plants of Helleborus x argutifolius, Aenonium canariense v. subplanum and Oxalis spiralis v. volcanicola and a Paullinia species vine in the
same area. My clients would ideally like the same shrub replaced, as the scented daphne-like winter blooms on bare trunks and tropical summer foliage made a nice foreground to the rest of the garden as viewed from the kitchen.

Anyone else have experience with this shrub?
