Re: Problematic Pergola

Personally, I'd be reticent to put a fruiting vine over a place where
people are sitting. Walkways are one thing, but the thought of fruit
falling and staining furniture and making it a pain to sit down would
bother me. I'm more of a fan of having flowering vines cover a
pergola, such as pink Jasmine (here, the flowers usually dry up before
they fall).

As far as grapes, living in a fairly cool part of California, they can
become rampant. I believe the University here has Vitis californica
'Rogers Red' planted on a sort of pergola at the science building and
it's taken several years for the vines to take off, but they've really
begun to get massive. There's also a house in town where the grape
vine looks massive, covering either an old arbor, or a now dead tall
shrub.
