Re: Small, urban-tree recommendations

I thought I might interject a piece of information here.

Washingtonia robusta grow very well here but I don't remember seeing fruit.

Being originally from North Dakota one of the first things I planted in my front yard was a four foot Washingtonia robusta. After all, I was now a Californian and I wanted to advertise that fact.

When it was probably 25 feet tall I was having problems with my main sewer line to the street (made of Orangeburg pipe, history at: "orangeburg" on your browser). I didn't know whether its roots were involved with my problem but since it was right on top of the main sewer line, we removed it when we replaced the orangeburg pipe with PVC., probably 20 years ago!

I never saw the palm bloom. One of the reasons I was glad to remove it is that it was getting too tall to conveniently trim the dead fronds. I haven't missed it at all.

So I will state that Washingtonia robusta grows vegetatively very well in our area, here on the Central Coast of California, about 200 miles south of San Francisco (10 miles from the ocean). ---Chas---

I thought you might be interested in this article saying carrotwood tree is invasive and dangerous to coasta l areas.

Articles that I've read say it's invasive in Florida and Hawaii but doesn't exhibit this tendency in California. That article you posted is for Florida gardeners. It's likely too cool for these trees to spread in Northern California (a bit like how I (almost) never see Washingtonia robusta seedlings or even flowers here along the coast.)
