Here's an update on the lost Leucadendrons. I took another sample to the lab and the results came back NOT indicating Phytopthora which was what we all assumed, but rather Fusarium. The pattern of plant death is described perfectly by the University of California Cooperative Extension's description of death by Fusarium: "Fusarium wilt symptoms often appear first on one side of a plant. Older
leaves usually die first in infected plants, commonly followed by death
of the entire plant." The description for Phytopthora doesn't describe the pattern of death at all. One of the recommendations for dealing with fusarium is to avoid overhead spray because "splashing water spreads
fungal spores and wet foliage...Use low-volume drip irrigation
or minisprinklers instead of overhead sprinklers where feasible." Pretty interesting…. Nan |
