In this country anyway, Monterey (Radiata) Pines have a VERY strong root
system. They never blow out of the ground. In exceptional winds (100+
mph) mature trees have been known to snap off about six feet above
ground without disturbing the roots!
Monterey Cypress on the other hand, has shallow roots that spread out in
a broad "disk" just below the surface. These do blow over in strong
winds, bringing this whole disk with them.
