RE: Ailanthus altissima
Ailianthus is a great weed especially since it does well in the desert.
However, you could try Dodonaea viscosa (var. "purpurea"), which is
native to Arizona deserts. it doesnt seem to be a weed here in Monterey
(dont see stray bushes in the empty lots around my city). I see a few
of them blooming right now (wonderful pinkish blooms (actually i think
those are bracts). This variety has wonderful reddish bronzy leaves,
and shaggy brown bark. But these plants if left to grow will get as big
as a small tree, with ample water (such as in a flower bed). With
little water theyll stay small You can also trim the lower branches up
like they did with these plants around the fence of an apartment
complex. I also know different species are also native to australia as
well.
