RE: Transplanting palms

I agree, seems drastic to me!
anyways most palms will get by on a small root ball, but from what ive
heard you should wrap the leaves up mostly to protect the sensitive
bud. After all if the bud dies so does the tree. Ive also seen newly
transplanted palms with the leaves cut off to cut down on
transpiration. Looks drastic but they do come back (the crowns in the
next year are smaller but they soon get back up to speed). There are
two palms that are sensitive to transplanting and yours arent the ones
ive heard (i forget their names right now but one is a common "weedy"
creeping palm from florida and the other is the Sabal Palmetto (i think
thats it). Also, your friend should brace the trees for a while so as
to keep them from toppling. Keep them watered and theyll be happy. I
also read an article about the diameter away from the trunks of several
species to initiate root branching. For instance, my Queen palm, its
suggested a minimum of 1 foot distance from the trunk. And on my
washingtonia, at least that difference as well. I transplanted both
and my queen palm is putting out a new shoot right now, so its doing
well.
