Roses for Shade

Rugosas certainly - Roserie de l'Haie (have I spelt that properly?)
and the fine yellow Agnes both do well here in semi-shade and Roserie
even in quite deep AND dry shade. Zephirine Drouhin, of course, will
put up with almost anything. I have a couple in tubs by the back door,
north facing, in deep, damp shade, with hardly any sun reaching them
at all. They're still flowering and, unless we get early frosts, have
at least another month to go. One which has done well here in those
conditions - more or less accidentally and not recommended for the job
by any book that I know of - is the big shrub/smallish climber,
Maigold. A vigorous, healthy, disease-free rose, with an overwhelming
explosion of big blowsy yellow flowers in late May or early June and a
sizeable second burst taking place now. It's a Kordes creation, I
think - from the 30s? I agree with Moira about the Pemberton roses,
too - Cornelia, yes, and Penelope, and even (though less happily) Buff
Beauty. If you want a climber, the old favourite Mme Alfred Carriere
is tough as boots and flowers non-stop all season anywhere. So there
are plenty to choose from...
