Julie:
There's a note in the Sunset Western Garden Book about the bad rap
goldenrod gets because it is confused with the midwestern cousin ragweed
that causes hayfever. I also grow Soldago californica, and it grows wild
everywhere around here. I've never known anyone to have any allergic
reactions to the plant.
A few more late-bloomers: Buddleia (re-bloom) and Caryopteris (someone
else also suggested). My Caryopteris "Longwood Blue" is absolutely
stunning for a couple weeks in August and it attracts dozens of
different pollinating insects. It also looks good all winter because the
silvery-white dry flowers are interesting.
