Katherine, I looked at the pictures and it looked like a match, but
I could not tell about the leaves, and then I went home and looked up
Phacelia campanularia in A-Z and there it was, a picture perfect match.

Chad, your "mystery plant" sounds to me like Phacelia campanularia,
commonly called California bluebells here in southern Arizona. Here in the
desert it's mostly a spring wildflower, but if it has some water it can
continue blooming through the summer. It's a beautiful deep blue, all
right! And it does self-sow to some extent, though never as much as I would
like...
