Katherine:
The California Rare Fruit Growers has a great information page on bananas at:
http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/banana.html. The Stokes Tropicals website
offers a large list of varieties with excellent descriptions at:
http://www.stokestropicals.com/ekart/index.asp?cn=stokes&cid=2, and also has
a page of cultural information at:
http://www.stokestropicals.com/banana_info.html. Prices seem pretty
reasonable. I'll let you know how mine turn out. I dug a big, deep hole for
the 10 foot tall plant, puddled it in well, and cut off all but the top 3
leaves, as the root ball (actually just a piece of corm with some roots
attached) was not that big, plus I'm afraid the thing will topple if we get
even a moderate wind. The guy who gave it to me suggested I cut the top off
of the plant completely about a foot or two, but I haven't been able to bring
myself to do that. The leaves haven't wilted yet, so I'm hopeful it will be
able to establish itself somewhat before the cold weather sets in. Because
it is so large already, I'm hopeful I'll be able to get fruit off it next
year, as most varieties take 18 to 30 months to fruit from planting (if not
set back too badly by cold weather). I'll keep this list posted on my
success or lack thereof. Thanks for your interest.
