I visited the Antelope Valley Poppy reserve (here in southern california)
a while back and learned that california poppies can be perennials
sometimes. They told me at the visitors center that they don't really
know why this happens but suspect increased watering has something to do
with it. I have tried this at home by watering a few of the poppy plants
that came up last fall and so far, the plants are still nice and green
although I haven't seen any flowers. Stilll, the leaves are quite pretty
in their own right being grey and fern-like.
