"Nashi" is Japanese for "apple" - or maybe "pear" - since it is not exactly either one. They are an everyday item in the greengrocers in Perth these days and as Trevor says, very juicy, grainy like a pear but crisper. The taste, to me, is mainly pear. I am surprised that they do not seem to have caught on in California as yet.
