I wonder if these aren't ripening correctly, or there is a bad variety going
around? If a medlar is ripe, there is nothing to chew - it's really like
spiced applesauce, sweet and rich. I just noticed that there were
"thumbs-down" responses from Australia. Maybe the climate doesn't suit
their proper development?
