RE: Potassium & wood ashes

Years ago I made soap with lard and Red Devil lye - both from the store. I
think I added some lanolin to it and some scent. The only danger was in
getting the lye on your skin before adding the lard - the soponification
process must have neutralized the lye to some degree. Then I poured the
stuff into cloth-lined pans to cure and harden and finally cut into bars. It
still smelled pretty much of lard. It was interesting to try once, but, my
gosh, a lot of work. How did our fore-mothers ever have time to do it all?

I also made a homemade broom a few years ago and raised the broom corn from
seed, picked it, combed off the seeds from the stalks, tied and wired it to
a handle. It looks fairly Halloweeny - if it could only fly! The broom corn
left over (it was a fancy multi-colored variety) made some nice dried
material for arrangements.

Back to perennials. I am immensely cheered that the 5-6 inches of snow that
we had last Friday melted leaving no damage to emerging plants - even the
blooming daffodils pushed down have straightened up again. My mertensia is
about to bloom, the scilla are still going strong, and the rabbits haven't
found the tulips yet.
