I am not old enough remember the Depression. I was born in 1940, so my
earliest memories of soap making would have been around the end of WW 2. Say about
44- 45. I can remember shortages such as no sugar, (used syrup instead... to be
exact Bob White syrup in tin cans), no leather goods (no biggie as we only
purchased shoes for winter), no rubber (tires for auto). That is about all I can
remember.
Mom probably make soap because we could not purchase any would be my guess.
European Wood Anemones (Anemone nemorosa) are in bloom. Came through all the
hard freezes after warm days just fine. Boy are these lovely little plants. Cut
foliage, only around 6 to 8 inches high, covered with blooms of all colors
depending upon the cultivar. White, rose, blue, lavender, yellow and a double
white.
