Hello Al,
A thought here... since the bud for the bloom emerges first could it be they
are warming up early and getting that bud up to be nipped by freezes? I know I
have to watch mine out in the garden each spring. They put up little noses that
need to be covered when it freezes at night. I just keep some leaves and a clay
pot handy in the area. When the weather person says freeze I cover them for the
night and remove the leaves and pot next day.. otherwise the slugs will get in
there with them.
