Re: E. Gateway was: Angelica gigas; eupatorium 'Gateway'

I bought 'Gateway' years ago. Originally, mine was about 5' tall
with the huge rounded flower heads of a much darker shade of 'pink'
(it ain't really pink) than the native ones in my area. Deer kept
mowing those down, but they had seeded out of the bed and into the
gravel of the parking area in the first couple of years before bambi
really got hungry.

I left many of them and dug a bunch and moved them and gave some
away. Of those I kept, the seedlings vary considerably from the
original plant. Some grow nearly 10' tall and some have the redder
stems, shorter stature and larger flowers of the original plants -
who gave up the ghost after about 5 years of getting munched to the
ground every year - and some are intermediate. Some have green stems
with little trace of red.

Agree with Claire...many/most of the plants offered as 'Gateway' are
likely seed grown and can be quite different from what 'Gateway' is
supposed to be.

I think height can be affected by a lot of things...the genes in the
plant, the site - a moist shady spot will give you a lot taller plant
than a drier sunny spot and likely the length of the growing season.
Whatever you end up with, butterflies will love it.

striking plants. Thanks for any help.
