Nice idea -- but most people who do these things also can't read!
I like Duncan's suggestion of throne thistles.

But, personally, I think the best deterrent would be cleverly disguised
animal traps.  Yes, yes, I know how much trouble I'd be in but I can dream,
can't I ?!?!

I am extremely lucky -- I live very, very near a small park with lots of
stuff for the kids to play on.  Evenings and weekends are filled with the
ball players "chatter" and, when I am working outside, I hear blood-curdling
screams and wonder if I'll read in the paper that someone was murdered!  

When diddling, I frequently find cables buried near the surface.  Seems like
the installers should know enough to go around gardens of any type!  
Sometimes I dream of "accidentally" cutting one to see what it is and where
it goes but I am such a coward!  When the first cable TV lines were run on
the telephone poles at the back of my lot, the installer trampled my garden!
