Good Morning and Happy Spring from Wiarton, Ontario.
Although I have been a member of this list for quite some time I
have not been a posting-participating member. Sooooo, I decided
that it was time I was. ;-)
I live and garden in Zone 5a-5b with many tiny micro-climates
which enables me to winter-over some plants from Zone 6.
Our property is situated on the North side of and at the base of the
Niagara Escarpment. Any gardening soil was trucked in and added
to raised beds-a long and exhausting process, which is ongoing.
In the Spring there is considerable run-off which leaves us with a
temporary scree-like condition which I would love to take advantage
of, however, the course of the run-off changes every year.
Interesting to observe, but a little frustrating.
Growing from seed is my Winter hobby that I enjoy thoroughly and
this year I started most of my seeds on damp paper towels in
small plastic (rectangular-1" deep) boxes that we buy fresh herbs
in and they work almost like a petri dish (sp?)
Many successes along with a few failures, but am winning so far.
It seems to be a fine line between germination and the rotting of the
seed.
This year most of my seed came from Chilterns' and from the
Primula Society via a friends' generous gift. They are new to me
and exciting.
The main garden is herbaceous perennials and herbs, with
surrounding pocket-type gardens in sun, part sun, shade, semi-
shade, stream beds and a very damp, but not quite bog condition.
This affords me the opportunity to satisfy my " almost- every
whim" while shopping for plants or ordering seeds--I am a happy
gardener!
Will endavour to stay out of "lurkdom" and hope to contribute a
little something now and again.
Happy to have found this list.
