Barb,

Several years ago, I obtained a batch of Helleborus orientalis seeds
from Jose Almandoz in northern Spain. They germinated well and gave
me enough seedlings to scatter throughout the yard. Some went on the
east side of my garage, with only the least amount of morning sun and
somewhat dry. Others went under a tall maple, with more sun, but
still a bit dry. Yet another batch went further away from the garage
and trees on a gentle east southeast-facing slope - more sun and more
moisture, but certainly not damp. So far the best performance was in
the last position, blooming last month for the first time. See:

I have never tried them in very sunny sitiuations nor very damp ones.
All the others are doing alright, tho, and I haven't killed any yet.
I've heard they are not fond of transplantation.

Don't give up!
