RE:squirrels

Claire & Paul,
I can relate to your squirrel travails. They nest in the Douglas Fir trees
in my neighborhood and particularly in my garden. They love the sunflower
seeds I put out for the birds in my "squirrel proof" (HA!) feeder. Someone
in the neighborhood thinks they are cute and feeds them peanuts and walnuts
which I find sprouting in my nursery pots. :( We also have the big gray
squirrels which were imported by some demented soul. And they have driven
out our native western squirrels which are much less aggressive. The only
thing the grays fear, (they certainly don't fear me or my dog), are the
crows which chase them along the telephone wires relentlessly. I have known
folks who had them nesting in their attic or fireplace and couldn't get them
out. What a mess. In spite of all I have said, I must admit I admire their
acrobatics when leaping from the trees to the feeder. Once in awhile they
miss - it's not a pretty sight!

I have the first grey squirrel, ever, in my garden. He is fat, healthy,
nearly as large as my small grey cat. The cat is very aggravated by him as
are nesting birds.

We have only had the timid red squirrels around occasionally. This fellow
is
accustomed to running all over the house. We think him trapped and dropped
here as happened when you live in the country. He is busy every day with the
acorns.

Lord, I hope he does not find a mate. There are enough rodents around here
now. If he digs up pots as Paul's squirrels, he will find himself in
another
trap.
