I would try that also.  I have some sort of variegated Symphytum which is 
similar.  It nearly wasted away with some sun on it so I moved it to a total 
shade location where it recovered and grew entirely green for a while.   Last 
year one half of the plant was variegated, a cream edge and splotches of 
cream on the leaves.  It may be that these plants need the perfect site to 
perform well.
