No, not at Home Depot. At three local nurseries which are pretty good for
annuals. Local for me is the Albany, New York area which is about a 45 minute
ride or more to these nurseries. I have a bunch of containers all over the
garden so do buy annuals as it is much easier than growing them. I was out
asking for a few things I know might be hard to find. One nursery told me
they take the grower's mix, do not order individually so get lots of
diversity or I suppose what the growers have too much of. This is the third
year we have been seeing Canadian plants in the early spring.
I think the plants are grown around Lake Ontario where there are many green
houses. Home Depot also will have one quart plants but not these more
interesting plants. It may be because we are closer to the border and the
Province of Ontario. I really do not know why.
My niece who is in the nursery business, mainly woody plants, said that she
was offered Canadian plants at very low cost if their trucks did the picking
up. She doesn't do perennials so left it alone.
I am so amazed at the cultivars offered. You should keep your eyes open at
all nurseries these days as diversity has improved a great deal. Even the HD
has been carrying dwarf rock garden rhododendrons at around 5.00. One never
knows.
Some of you may be able to plant out sooner than we can. I have to keep
these plants in a cold frame for a few more weeks. We had an inch of snow
this morning sitting right on top of the PJM's.
