We grow lost of phormiums here in Southern California. They are the perfect spiky compliment to nearly any garden. Some grow 8' tall and wide while others, like 'tom thumb,' get to only 10" or so. The color of the foliage is what I think is so wonderful. In my garden, I have one that is green and yellow with a red margin, one green with a red margin, several that are burgundy, one that is olive and coral colored stripes... they take little water and have no pests to speak of.
I ignored phormiums for a long time because they are used extensively in commercial landscapes but lately I've found them invaluable in teh garden, both in garden beds and in pots.
