general sedum question

otherwise - what the heck happened?

I started (yes, late, I know) to clean up the gardens, yesterday. And big S. Matrona came up in my hand. The entire bottom looks gnawed on a like bone. There seems to be life, but no roots. I plan on giving them a nice, almost moist home for a week to see if I get roots.

And this seems to have happened to all the sedums in this bed to some extant.
