dividing Aruncus dioicus

Has anyone ever divided a mature Aruncus dioicus?  I know the roots are big
and woody and I don't know if it would survive such an operation.  The thing
is bigger than the space allotted to it, but I'd hate to kill it.  It might be
easier just to move all its neighbors somewhere else!
