I have 4 or 5 different Acorus and yes, they do not have to have wet soil but really like it. Growing some little ones in a trough. I hunted that little one for over 20 years!

The Acorus I had before & now is touted as a water plant but I found it did just fine in clayey soil.

I thought that for a while, but then I had an injury one summer and lots of things sacrificed themselves to give me more spots in the garden. So thoughtful! :)
But generally speaking, I find myself tending to buy smaller plants -- alpines, succulents, miniature hosta, etc.

Nice! How much water does the Acorus take? We get bone-dry down here, so I haven't tried yet. I've tried the Geum, but suspect that my drainage wasn't good enough.
