I have been growing Eremurus robustus (sp?) for a few years. They are
growing on the south side of my house under the eave, so I control the
amount of water they receive. The flower stems are about seven feet
tall, and the flower color is a pale pink. After flowering, the foliage
dies back.
I am growing some from seed, using seed I collected from my plants. The
seed requires stratification before it will germinate. I place mine in
a bag with some barely moist potting soil and place it in the frig for
at least 12 weeks. If you leave the seed in the frig, it will
eventually sprout. After removing from the frig, I plant the seed in a
very well drained potting mix. A three sided leaf that looks like a
rats tail will soon emerge, and quickly grow to 4 to 8 inches tall. It
will die back after only 4 weeks or so, and the plant will go dormant.
The root of the plant at this stage is about the size of a fat match
stick. I keep the soil quite dry while they are dormant. After
vernalization, the second years growth is similar to the first years,
but sometimes you get two leaves instead of one. The plant doesn't go
dormant as quickly either - the second year foliage will last for a few
months. I don't have any seedlings beyond this stage, so someone else
will have to fill in the remaining years. I am guessing it will take
less than the often quoted seven years to bloom.
