Regarding dividing penstemon- they grow fron a rosette, if the clump is
really big- use two garden forks back to back to pry the clumps into
smaller bits; if the clump is smallish, use your hands to tear the mass
into smaller bits- just make sure each bit has a bud and the attached
roots in it. Replant them immediately. I use willow water for all my
transplants and divisions- it encourages new root growth.
To make willow water, just mash up young willow wands in some water and
let it steep for a day or two, dilute and use anytime you want to
encourage rooting. ( the rooting hormone you buy is a synthetic version
of the compounds found in willows)
