Re: Garden design

I would certainly recommend Janet Macunovich's book "Easy Garden Design" for
anyone, but especially one with a clean slate. A terrific book, soft cover
and not very expensive. Published by Storey, and available at or from any
larger bookstore. It is also available from Amazon.com for $13.56 +
shipping. There are a long ton of books on perennials and woody landscape
plants. The two I use the most are "Manual of Herbaceous Ornamental Plants"
by Steven Still, and "Manual of Woody Landscape Plants" by Michael Dirr.
These are BIG heavy duty manuals, and have relatively few pictures, but are
the definitive references and are both easy to use. Dirr has just published
a newer version of his book, with a lot more pictures, but I have only had a
glance at it. I also use the two volume "Perennials" by Roger Phillips and
Martyn Rix, published by Random House.

I have used several versions of Sierra's "Land Designer", and am concerned
that the plant database doesn't seem accurate, and also "Horticopia" which
is expensive and very quirky software, but a great plant database. I just
came home from an 'Annual and Perennial Horticulture' class where the prof
demonstrated "Garden Encyclopedia" and "Garden Companion Deluxe" this
afternoon. I haven't personally used either, but I was more impressed by
what I saw than by what I have used to date. Both are under $50 from Best
Buy and other retail stores. I will probable buy both the first time I see
them.
