All mulches use nitrogen to break down. The shorter the time of
decomposition, the better, but overall mulching doesn't hurt the soil.
Once the decomposition process is complete, the nitrogen is released
into the soil. Compost is good as a mulch because most of the
decomposition process is complete.
Personally, I use wood chip mulches with plenty of success.
