I haven't used the blocks of coconut fiber, but I tried something called
"Magic Earth" from Wal-Mart, which I think uses coconut fiber instead of peat.
I used it to pot up some rooted cuttings of coleus and impatiens and they
simply did not do well. Pelargonium cuttings did marginally all right. I
finally repotted the coleus and impatiens and they had practically no roots.
Admittedly, there are a few fungus gnats around ( I wonder if they came from
Wal-Mart), but there was noticeable improvement when I got everything into a
peat-based mix. I wouldn't touch that stuff again.
