Hi Margot,
How about using a cold frame with the lid propped open an inch or
two? Then every weekend open the lid wider and wider until it is all the
way open for a week and by then they should be well hardened off and ready
to plant outside. Unless it gets awfully hot, if you water before you
leave on Sunday, your plants should be just fine until you get back again
the next weekend.
I have a simple homemade coldframe made from one by twos and 6 mil
clear plastic. I put it up against the south side of the fence so the
plants don't get any direct sun. It holds 6 10x20 flats and does a good
job for very little money. This is the third spring I have used it and the
plastic will have to be replaced (it is just stapled on with a heavy duty
staple gun) before next season. Marilyn
