Re: silver maples
I am not anti-tree. I have many. But you know the phrase, 'Right plant,
Right place'? The same holds true for trees.
Here in Cincinnati, in the 1940's, many builders planted thousands of
silver maples because they provided quick green shade. Today, the
homeowners are still pruning and cleaning up after those trees. I
repeat: they are not worth having in a yard. A better variety of a bad
cultivar is still a bad cultivar.
Instead, plant something native. Here in the Midwest, Yellowwood and
Swamp Oak would be good choices. These are trees for a lifetime, maybe
two.
If you have a few extra acres, plant silver maples. As their tops rot
out, the trunks provide wonderful habitat for woodpeckers and snakes.
