I was psyched to read your advice about adding a layer of compost before mulching. We had planned on trying that this year to improve the quality of our soil! You mentioned that you apply Preem first. What is Preem, and how/why do you use it? And, do you add a layer of mucl after or is this redundant?

i start a fresh compost each summer by adding all grass clippings,
vegetable scraps and unwanted debris from our large vegetable garden as
fall arrives we add leaves and then feed the entire pile into a shredder.
after it sits and cures all winter come spring i prepare my perennial
beds add PREEM and apply a generous layer of the compost. I do find
that oak leaves aren't acceptable to me as they take longer to decompose.
after several years of this treatment my perennial beds have relatively
few weeds and the soil is beautiful.
