Dahlias

I'm in zone 5 I think, Michigan and i'm wondering if I can leave dahlias in my
beds through the winter if they are mulched. I've been growing them for about
4 years now and I lost several leaving them in the dirt (no mulch) one year so
I've always religiously dug them each fall and replanted in the spring but its
gotten more than a little old to do this each year. Any ideas if mulch or what
else I can use to get them through winter?
