Hi Paula,
I too have a shaded area in the backyard, covered almost entirely
by 2 large white pines, several balsam firs, some canadian hemlock,
and some various spruces.
What I've successfully planted under there:
Lots of different ferns
Asarum canadense Wild ginger
Brunnera macrophylla Perennials forget-me-not
Gaultheria procumbens Wintergreen
Geranium cantagbriense 'Biokovo'
Geranium macrorrhizum 'Bevan's Variety' Creeping geranium
Geranium macrolatum Wild geranium
Hedera helix English ivy
Hosta spp. Various hostas
Leucothoe fontanesiana Dog hobble
Pulmonaria saccharata Lungwort
Rhododendron 'Karen's' Karen's azalea
Rhododendron catawbiense Catawba rhododendron
Trillium recurvatum Prairie trillium
Uvularia grandiflora Large-flowered bellwort
Vinca minor Periwinkle
I have a whole bunch of other plants to add or that haven't been
there long enough to know if they're a success:
Arisaema triphyllum Jack-in-the-pulpit
Dicentra cucullaria * Dutchman's britches
Dicentra formosa * Western bleeding heart
Dicentra spectabilis * Bleeding heart
Geranium himalayense Lilac Cranesbill
Geranium phaeum 'Album' White widow's tears
Geranium pratense Meadow cranesbill
Hedeoma pulegiodes American pennyroyal
Phlox divaricata Wild sweet william
Phlox divaricata 'Clouds of Perfume' Wild sweet william
Podophyllum peltatum Mayapple
Polemonium caeruleum Jacob's ladder
Polemonium caeruleum 'Album' White Jacob's ladder
Sanguinaria canadensis Bloodroot
Sanguinaria canadensis 'Flore Pleno' Double-flowering bloodroot
Thalictrum aquilegifolium Columbine-leaved meadow rue
Thalictrum revolutum Waxy-leaved meadow rue
Tiarella wherryi * Foamflower
There's a lot more plants in pots that I just got, so I might not have
the names of them all. Plants with an asterisk are watered regularly
and planted in soil amended with leaf mold and spaghnum.
Chris
